West Galt has the oldest and most demanding masonry in Cambridge. The stone and buff brick homes above the river were built with soft lime mortar, and most have been repaired at least once with something far too hard — which is the single most common reason a century wall starts shedding brick faces.
On these houses we test the existing mortar before quoting, mix to match, and rake by hand where a grinder would chew the arrises off a soft brick. Heritage sills, segmental arches and limestone foundations all come up regularly here, and none of them respond well to a fast job.
